- Story Text: Several wounded in fierce clashes at West Bank
barrier.
Several people have been injured in heavy clashes on
Sunday (March 14, 2004) between Israeli border policemen
and demonstrators against the West Bank barrier.
Fierce clashes erupted in the West Bank village of
Media after a few hundred demonstrators attempted to
prevent bulldozers from digging up land Palestinians seek
for a future state.
Israeli border policemen fired rubber bullets and tear
gas to disperse the stone-throwing crowd of Palestinian
villagers and Israeli peace activists. At least one Israeli
and one Palestinian were reported wounded in the
confrontation.
Israel says it needs the barrier to keep Palestinian
militants out, Palestinians call it a land grab.
The massive network of wires and cement is part of
Sharon's plan to be presented in an upcoming visit to
Washington.
Sharon is attempting to win Washington's backing to
remove Jewish settlements and possibly withdraw troops from
the Gaza Strip should the U.S.-backed peace "road map"
remain stalled.
The Israeli Prime Minister convened the weekly cabinet
meeting in Jerusalem on Sunday hours ahead of a scheduled
meeting between top aides to Sharon and Palestinian Prime
Minister Ahmed Qurie to pave the way for a long-awaited
meeting between the two leaders on how to restart peace
talks.
In his opening remarks, Sharon expressed his
condolences to the people of Spain and said the Madrid
attacks showed that 'there is no compromise with terror.'
"Good morning, I want to open this meeting by
expressing our condolences to the people in Spain, after
many victims died as a result of a cruel terror act. These
acts, that repeat themselves, teach us something we have
already known in Israel for many years, there is no
compromise with terror. There could not be a situation in
which we compromise with terror. Terror must be fought and
the struggle against terror must not be stopped. This is
Israel's stance. I hope that the world is awakening and now
understands that we should all gather together to act
against terror. Once again, on behalf of all of us here, I
want to express our condolences to Spain and it's people,"
he said.
Israel wants U.S. support for annexing West Bank
settlement blocs in return for evacuating Gaza in
unilateral moves, political sources said on Friday
(March 12).
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says his
"disengagement plan" aims to defuse conflict. Palestinians
say it would strip them of land they seek for a viable
state under a U.S.-backed "road map" peace plan sidelined
by persistent violence.
