- Story Text: Thousands have attended the funeral of Ahmed Marshoud,
a member of the militant Islamic Hamas group, who was killed
in an explosion which Palestinians say was an Israeli
assassination.
Israel has pulled tanks out of the West Bank city of
Hebron and said it would take further steps to ease the
closure on the West Bank.
Thousands of Palestinians marched through the West Bank
city of Nablus on Monday (October 15) as they mourned the
death of Ahmed Marshoud, a member of the militant Islamic
Hamas group, killed in an explosion earlier on Monday.
Marshoud's death was the second assassination in two days,
an internationally condemned track-and-kill Israeli policy.
It was unclear how Marshoud's car exploded. Some
Palestinians said it was struck by a helicopter missile
strike, while others said it was booby-trapped and exploded as
Marshoud walked past. The Israeli army declined to comment on
the assassination.
With the assassinations, retaliatory bombings by Hamas
could wreck the ceasefire, despite heavy pressure by the U.S.
on Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to reign-in militants.
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction called
the killings 'organised terrorism'.
Palestinian council member Hanan Ashrawi had said that if
Israel wants to revive peace talks it should concentrate on
lifting the closure from the Palestinian cities and stop what
she said were 'deliberate assassinations'.
The killing on Monday brought the toll to 626 Palestinians
and 175 Israelis since a Palestinian revolt against Israeli
occupation erupted in September 2000 after a deadlock in peace
negotiations.
Meanwhile on Monday, Israel has pulled tanks out of
Palestinian controlled areas in the West Bank town of Hebron
and said it would take further steps to ease the closure.
Outside the West Bank city of Ramallah, Palestinian cars
appeared to be moving through checkpoints, after weeks of
closure.
The easing of the siege was made under apparent U.S.
pressure as part of Washington's bid for support in the region
for its war on terrorism and went ahead despite the killing of
an Islamic militant on Sunday (October 14) by Israeli forces.
The latest move in Hebron had reverses re-occupation on
October 5 when Israeli troops and armour entered
neighbourhoods in the volatile town after Palestinian gunmen
fired into a crowd of Jewish worshippers in the heart of
Hebron two days earlier.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's cabinet said in a statement
it had decided to ease travel between some Palestinian cities
in the West Bank, allowing the entry of petrol and widening
the permitted fishing zone in the Gaza Strip, provided
Palestinians fulfilled their commitments.
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat has met in London on
Monday with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Britain is Washington's strongest ally in a military
campaign in Afghanistan and is also keen to kick-start the
moribund Middle East peace process.
