- Story Text: Viktor & Rolf glamour is inspired by nature and Paco
Rabanne delves into a world of stylish greys and pearly
halftones.
The Viktor and Rolf 2004-2005 autumn/winter
collection was presented in Paris on Friday (March 5).
The theme of Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren's
collection was wildlifeand nature and models displayed an
unusual head-dress resembling the antlers of a wild deer.
The concept of woman as a wild deer was far from
rugged, instead the Dutch designers' collection was
elegant, glittery and slender.
Talking about their inspiration for the collection
Rolf Snoeren said, "It started with a hunting theme but for
us, as always, you know, we start with the classic pieces,
we always like the classic stuff, but we twisted to make it
modern and edgy and we do that by working on the
silhouettes and as well by twisting the masculine and the
feminine aspects of clothes."
The staple scarf was give a new lease of life as it was
taken from the neck or shoulder and floated down to form
the full or partial frontal of a dress.
For trouser suits, satin scarves were knotted loosely
and left to cascade down the body adding an extra element
of glamorous fluidity.
The wildlife theme was picked up in luxuriously subtle
ways by incorporating a spider and insect print mauve
satin, small gold insect attachments and tarantula sized
spider broaches.
Several dresses exposed the flawless skin of the
model's back or cutaway over the breast at the front.
A bow motif at neck and waistlines, added further
femininity to the clothing.
Necklines were either very high or very low cut to
emphasis the slender female shape.
Double collared shirts, gathered in ruffles at the
back, were paired with trouser suits to give an original
and figure defining touch.
Wool jackets were cut short at the bust or above the
waist highlighting the models' slimline figures.
The Dutch duo have moved on from their opening
fashion shows of experimental design and social statements
to creating elegant and glamorous women's wear yet
retaining their sense of originality and style. The Viktor
& Rolf woman, they say, is a free spirit who can make her
own decisions.
In the Paco Rabanne show greys and pearly halftones
tending towards blue and greens were undoubtedly the choice
shades of the season. Black and white also played their
part in profoundly matt or deliciously glossy materials.
Metals, as always in Paco Rabanne collections,
glamorised the majority of pieces, while sophisticated
materials like cashmere silk and satin vied for attention.
A long back cashmere trench coat was accentuated all
over with black sequins, cutting a perfect silhouette.
Dresses made of metal plates swung luxuriously around the
female form.
Metallic glints drew attention to a long,
loose-fitting fox and red rabbit fur coat illuminated by
little gold-effect plates. Underneath the model wore a
two-layer sleeveless dress of glossy satin and chiffon, the
materials playing hide-and-seek with light and transparency.
A collection of bracelets and long chains added to
the theme of the collection. Jewelled or braided bags were
tightened with straps and belts and crocheted metal
appeared effortlessly assembled into nets and meshes.
