- Story Text: Hundreds of ethnic Albanians from Macedonia are
continuing to stream across the border into Kosovo amid fears
of an escalation in the conflict between Macedonians and
ethnic Albanians.
Most of the refugees streaming across the border from
Macedonia into Kosovo, Yugoslavia on Tuesday (June 12), as on
days before, said they had come from Skopje.
There tensions are high following threats by ethnic
Albanian guerrillas to shell the city unless the Macedonia
government stops its military attacks on Macedonian villages
held by ethnic Albanian rebels. Some of the ethnic Albanians
refugees had originally travelled to Skopje from Kosovo two
years ago.
A total of 38,840 ethnic Albanians have crossed into
Kosovo from Macedonia in recent weeks. On Monday, 5,330 ethnic
Albanians from Macedonia crossed into Kosovo -- the biggest
number since the trouble began.
On Tuesday (June 12), more than 100 people had crossed the
border at Blace by 0600gmt. On Monday, the Macedonian army had
called a surprise halt to a four-day bombardment of
guerrilla-held villages and ethnic Albanian rebels, who had
been threatening to launch attacks on Skopje.
The ceasefire in Macedonia looked doomed on Tuesday after
ethnic Albanian rebels ambushed a police patrol, despite a
promise to hold their fire.
