- Story Text: The elation showed by Kosovar Albanians after the
recent municipal elections is in stark contrast to the mood
of Serbs still living in Kosovo, effectively trapped in
isolated pockets, unable to move and totally dependent on
K-FOR troops for protection.
Around 100,000 Serbs fled Kosovo as NATO troops moved
in last year. Of a similar number who stayed on, only 1000
registered to vote in the weekend elections.
The rest boycotted the ballot, saying they could not vote
until their rights of movement and safety could be guaranteed.
The village of Bahie lies close to the divided city of
Mitrovica, the largest serb enclave. Bahie is surrounded by
Albanian villages and relies totally on French K-FOR troops
for protection.
Conditions there are grim. Residents attempt to process
corn in the local mill but are otherwise totally reliant on
supplies from humanitarian aid organisations.
"Is this democracy, if the Serbs can't go to their houses.
the roads are blocked, they (the Sserbs) don't have freedom of
movement in our own territory?", said Milivoje Jokhsimovic.
"This is not democracy. Probably this is some democracy but
this is only democracy for Albanians."
New Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica has declared
that Kosovo remains part of Serbia and Serbia's government
said the elections were unacceptable because they served "one
nation only", the Albanians.
