- Story Text: In Lisbon on Monday (21 April) the Maoist Movement for the Reorganisation of the Proletarian Party (M.R.P.P.) staged a protest at what they have called an "electoral farce".
On Friday (25 April) Portugal goes to the polls in the country's first free elections for 48 years. But not the Maoists -- their Party has been banned from taking part in the elections.
Two thousand of them staged a rally and marched to a government building, which was guarded by troops and armoured cars.
They are also protesting for the release of over 100 of their comrades recently arrested since the start of the election campaign.
The M.R.P.P. has been branded a "counter-revolutionary organisation" by the Communists and severely criticised by the left-wing military.
