It is possible to wind down the window and get rid of the cigarette that way, or to have a passenger put the cigarette out, but i think the actual smoking doesn't distract you when driving." 3.10 11. SOUNDBITE (German) SMOKER DANIEL SCHWEIGERT SAYING: "It's quite right. It's just like if you are on the phone or doing something else, you are distracted, you can't concentrate on driving the car. So i think it's good, even though I am a smoker, I don't smoke in the car." 3.19 12. - Story Text: German lawmakers want to ban smoking for drivers.
Several German lawmakers want to ban smoking while
driving, saying it's hazardous.
"The dangers of causing an accident rise drastically when
you smoke and drive," said Peter Danckert of the ruling
Social Democrats".
Danckert told Germany's best-selling newspaper, Bild,
that he will push for legislation to outlaw smoking for
drivers, and noted parliament had passed a law outlawing
the use of cell phones for drivers.
"Which driver is prepared to say that the accident
which happened was due to my cigarette falling out of my
mouth while I was driving, or that ash fell onto me? No one
will admit that of their own free will, that was the case
with mobile phones as well. You know that something like
that happens, everyone has experienced it as a passenger."
The German motoring club ADAC rejected calls to ban
smoking.
"Seen statistically, there is no significant relations
that say that smokers cause more traffic accidents than
non-smokers, or that smoking in the car is more likely to
cause accidents than not smoking, there you are really
comparing apples with pears, shooting at sparrows with
cannons," said ADAC spokesman Klaus Reindl.
"It makes no sense to ban smoking while driving, before
you do that you could ban various other things while
driving, for example you could think about banning
listening to the radio, or banning talking to people, the
whole thing doesn't make any sense, and I don't think it
will go through", he added..
