- Story Text: David Beckham will play a part in England's friendly match against France and make his 100th appearance for his country.
David Beckham will play some part in England's friendly against France in Paris on Wednesday, when he will win his 100th cap, manager Fabio Capello said on Tuesday (March 26).
The Italian, who left Beckham out of his first squad against Switzerland in February, had included him in the squad for the Stade de France game and told a news conference that the midfielder would see some action.
"I couldn't possibly make him come from the U.S. and not play him" Capello said of the LA Galaxy player, without saying whether he would start the match.
Beckham, who made his debut in 1996, joins Peter Shilton (125), Bobby Moore (108), Bobby Charlton (106) and Billy Wright (105) in the England hundred club and Capello, who coached Beckham at Real Madrid, said that the 32-year-old could go on to win many more caps.
"Well I know David Beckham and I know what he can give me and I think he can make the difference in some respects, I know what he can give to the team and I know that in some cases he can make the difference" said Capello, whose first major task as coach will be to get the team qualified for the 2010 World Cup.
"As for the future we will have to see, nobody knows what the future holds" Capello added.
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand will be the captain for tomorrow's game against the French as Capello continues his policy of rotating the captaincy until the 2010 qualifiers begin.
The appointment, even on a temporary basis, represents a huge personal triumph for Manchester United central defender Ferdinand, who was banned from playing for eight months in 2003 for failing to take a scheduled drugs test on time.
"Honestly that doesn't have really any bearing on me being the captain and David having his 100th cap, I mean we are both going to be walking out there, two of the proudest men in the world tomorrow night for different reasons. But again, we are both doing exactly the same thing which is playing for England and we going to have the same thing in the back of our minds is what to do is to win the game and that's the most important thing." said Ferdinand. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
