I think both of us (turns to Ambrosius) are pretty optimistic. No one counted on things going so well and now that they did it we came up with a hymn for Bayern Munich which Matthias arranged for."

- Story Text: When Bayern Munich fly to London on Friday (May 24) for this weekend's Champions League final against Dortmund, Jupp Heyncke's team will have something special in their luggage: their very own hymn, conducted by Munich Philharmonic Maestro Lorin Maazel.
The "Bayern Munich hymn" was composed by one of the ensemble's musicians, clarintest Matthias Ambrosius and a music manager who wrote the lyrics.
"On the way to the biggest title / Bayern Munich as strong as never before / earliest German champion of all times / Schweini, Mueller, Lahm, Ribery / with Jupp Heynckes at the helm / the triple has never been closer / bring the trophy to Munich / star of the south / we are who we are," the choir sings in the recently performed piece.
"We thought about what components should be included" in the hymn, Ambrosius told Reuters Television, adding "the final is taking place in Wembley. Everyone knows the English national anthem. Bayern Munich is represented through the Bavarian hymn with a new text that (music manager) Thomas (Berg) wrote and finally, the element that combines it all is the Champions League."
"What a lot of people might not know is that the Champions League hymn is by Georg Friedrich Haendel from the coronation anthems," Ambrosius said.
Much to his and Berg's surprise, Maestro Maazel agreed to participate and he even wore a Bayern Munich jersey for the occasion "even though he might not be an avid soccer fan," as Berg put it. "But I think he is about to become one," he said with a smile.
Bayern will be chasing the triple this year after they already won the German Bundesliga and are also guaranteed a place in the German Cup final on June 1.
Dortmund will be looking to win their first Champions League trophy since 1997, with four-time European champions Bayern aiming to make it five in their third final appearance in four seasons. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
