- Story Text: A purported audio tape of Osama bin Laden aired on Al Jazeera television on Sunday (January 24) claimed responsibility for an attempted Christmas Day plane bombing and the al Qaeda leader vowed to continue attacks on the United States.
The Yemen-based regional wing of al Qaeda has said it was behind the Dec. 25 attempt to blow up the plane as it approached Detroit. The botched attack and subsequent threats in Yemen prompted Sanaa to declare an open war on the global militant group within its territory.
Nigerian suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is charged with attempted murder and attempted use of a "weapon of mass destruction."
Abdulmutallab is arraigned on six charges, including attempted murder and the attempted use of a "weapon of mass destruction" to bring down a plane carrying 289 other people. He faces life in prison if convicted.
U.S. officials say Abdulmutallab tried to ignite explosives concealed in his clothing as the flight from Amsterdam prepared to land in Detroit, but was subdued by other passengers. Abdulmutallab has been linked to a Yemen-based branch of al Qaeda. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
