- Story Text: An explosion and fire at a storage tank at the state-owned Gaoqiao oil refinery in Shanghai's industrial Pudong sent plumes of smoke into the sky on Sunday (May 9).
The fire was at a 1,000-tonnes naphtha storage tank, a Sinopec media officer told Reuters, adding that there would be no impact on production.
The explosion occurred around 11:23 a.m. (0323GMT) according to the Gaoqiao district fire fighting department.
Firefighters and two dozen fire trucks rushed to the scene to attempt to put out the blaze, witnesses said.
"At 11:20 am (0320 GMT), there was a big fire and lots of smoke was coming out. The people from the local fire department did not even have their lunch, they threw down everything and they quickly made their way here. There were so many fire trucks coming here," said Witness, Zhang Yingquan.
The 230,000 barrel-per-day refinery is one of China's largest.
It is owned by Sinopec, China's largest oil refining corporation. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
