- Story Text: Dutch police have arrested an Italian man named by German police as the main suspect for the murder of six men outside a pizza restaurant in Germany in 2007 in a Calabrian mafia feud, Italian media reported on Friday.
Ansa news agency said Giovanni Strangio was arrested in Amsterdam with his brother-in-law, also wanted for mob activity, in a joint operation between Dutch, German and Italian police late on Thursday (March 12).
Police believe the shootings in Duisburg, northwest Germany, which killed six Italian men, were the bloodiest episode in a long-running feud between two rival clans of the mafia from Calabria in southern Italy, known as the 'Ndrangheta.
The Calabrian mob has grown into the most powerful of the Italian mafia organisations with most of its cash coming from illegal drug trafficking.
The feud is believed to have its roots in an egg-throwing incident in Carnival in 1991 which evolved into a turf war over drugs between the Nirta-Strangio and Pelle-Vottari clans. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
