- Story Text: Days of heavy snowfall have left 100 villages in Croatia's coastal hinterland cut off, leaving locals to battle power outages and food shortages.
As rescue services try to reach stranded villagers, brothers Jaksa and Zoran Radic have found their own solution.
The Radic's, from the hamlet of Radici near Zagvozd, on Monday (January 6) harnessed their horse to trek through the mountains to get supplies for Zoran's young family.
The family's very own 4-wheel drive, jokes Zoran before heading off through the 2-metre-deep snow.
"His wife and a two-month-old child are in the village. They ran out of milk for the baby, we tried in Zagvozd but could not find any there, shops are out of milk. We will later have to go to get the milk in Imotski town," Jaksa explains, giving his brother a bag of supplies to see him through.
The hinterland of the Croatian Adriatic coast was the hardest hit by heavy snow over the weekend.
Rescuers reached some of the villages on Sunday afternoon, when army machinery moved in to clear the snow.
In one village a woman gave birth in her house with the help of a neighbour, while a midwife from a nearby town gave them instructions by phone.
Weather services forecast more snow until Wednesday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
