- Story Text: Formula One fever came alive in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (March 21) when Mercedes drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg greeted hundreds of fans in a shopping mall and signed autographs.
Mercedes' new W03 car disappointed in the F1 season-opener in Australia, with gearbox problems and a punctured tyre forcing both Schumacher and Rosberg to retire early.
Schumacher went off the track on lap 10, while Rosberg's race ended on lap 12 with the puncture.
Looking to Sunday's race on the Sepang circuit, both drivers hoped for a better performance in the Malaysia Grand Prix.
Seven-time F1 champion Schumacher said he couldn't wait to get back on the track.
"I mean, naturally after not achieving the result that we're looking for the best is to have a grand prix -- straight up to game -- that we can physically show up and get results in that we look for," Schumacher told a news conference.
His German compatriot Rosberg commented: "Melbourne was a bit more difficult for us, but we are going to be working very, very hard to put in a better performance here in Malaysia."
Mercedes F1 team principal Ross Brawn said engineers have been working hard to improve the new car and the weather in Malaysia could prove crucial.
"We can face some rain here. It's quite common obviously for us to be dealing with a wet track which can bring some new challenges. None of us have very much experience with these 2012 cars yet in the wet, so we've got to understand how that works, So we have a programme that's, you know, determined and if the cars run OK then Friday, Saturday morning will be mostly focussing on getting the cars in good shape for the race," said Brawn. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
