- Story Text: Mohammed Ali, the former world heavyweight champion, and the Dutch champion, Rudi Lubbers have been training hard in Indonesia's summer heat in preparation for their fight on Saturday (20th October).
Ali has been putting in brisk roadwork around a public golf course in the Indonesian capital, Djakarta, at dawn and training with his sparring partners in the late afternoon, to beat the oppressive heat. Both fighters have said the heat could affect their performances in the fight, to be held in the Soviet-built Senayan Stadium in Djakarta.
Lubbers, who's ranked 13th in the world heavyweight ratings, and is three years younger than the 31-year-old Ali, said he felt he had a better than 50-50 chance of beating the former World champion. Ali's standard reply has been "He must be crazy." But he said it was a fight he didn't want, and didn't need. It was arranged before the return fight with Joe Frazier, and was "too risky." He said he was taking it very seriously, because young and hungry fighters were dangerous.
Ali, who's been guaranteed 200,000 dollars (GBP80,000 sterling) for the fight, has demonstrated his fitness at exhibition bouts in Indonesia's second major city, Sarabaya. He is scheduled to give more exhibition bouts in South East Asia before meeting Joe Frazier at Madison Square Garden in New York on January 28th.
It was revealed on Friday (October 19th) that Ali had turned down an offer of GBP 2,000,000 to fight the World heavyweight champion, George Forman, in preference for the rematch against Frazier.
