- Story Text: The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, said that the bombings in Algiers which killed at least 47 were "unacceptable".
The head of the Arab League today condemned today's bombings in the Algerian capital that killed at least 47 people.
Amr Moussa, the long-serving head of the 22 member, Cairo based league, said that the car bomb attacks in upscale districts of the Algerian capital, Algiers on Tuesday, were terrorism that targeted innocent civilians.
"These acts we condemn again. This is something unacceptable and a practice of violence, a practice of terrorism - against whom? Against their brothers, the Algerian citizens," he said.
Today's bombings were the bloodiest attack since the 1990s on the capital of the OPEC member states.
"Well my reaction is full condemnation. It is unacceptable to threaten and terrorize the Algerian society. And for what reason?," said Arab League Secretary-General, Amr Moussa.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but commentators said it appeared the work of al Qaeda's north Africa wing, which claimed a similar bombing in downtown Algiers in April and other blasts east of the capital over the summer that have worried foreign investors.
One of Tuesday's blasts struck near the Constitutional Court building in Ben Aknoun district and the other close to the U.N. offices and a police station in Hydra, both areas where several Western companies have their offices, a source said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
