- Story Text: The Indochinese Tigers (Panthera tigris corbetti) in the Berlin Tierpark proudly present their offspring. And it is a spectacular sight! Seven weeks ago tiger quadruplets were born, a spokesperson of the zoo said.
"It is a special thing because this tiger is endangered," said keeper Detlef Jany. "Also special is the fact that it is quadruplets which are being raised successfully. That is not the norm with four cubs. Sometimes we have one that is quite sickly and that means more work in feeding it. Here it goes very smoothly, they all are very well."
On Friday (September 30) the girl tigers Thaya, Salween, Mandalay and their baby brother Lampun were introduced to the public for the first time.
"It is a litter of one boy cub and three girl cubs," Jany told Reuters. "And the boy cub is named Lampun, and the three girl cubs are Salween, Thaya and Mandalay. These are names we looked up from the atlas, it is from the region of the Indochinese tigers. Mostly it is places or rivers or so."
Despite the fact that cats are regularly born in the Berlin Tierpark, quadruplets are a rarity - the last litter born in the zoo was in 1988. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
