- Story Text: Russian human rights group Memorial and its founder Svetlana Gannushkina are among the contenders for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.
Memorial is a community of many different organisations in the former Soviet Union which aims to reveals truths about the Soviet past and monitor current human rights in former Soviet states. It works through specialised research, human rights and education centres In 2007, Gannushkina received the Homo Homini award. It is given each year by the People In Need organisation, to the person who it believes deserves special recognition for their promotion of human rights, democracy and non-violent solutions.
