- Story Text: African Development Bank president attends inauguration ceremony in Algiers to open its office in Algeria.
African Development Bank Group President, Donald Kaberuka on Thursday (February 18, 2010) inaugurated the institution's office in Algeria.
The inauguration was attended by Algerian Foreign Affairs Minister, Mourad Medelci, and the Algerian Finance Minister Karim Djoudi, who is also the AfDB governor for Algeria.
The event was also attended by other government officials as well as representatives of diplomatic missions of AFDB's member countries accredited to Algeria and business leaders.
Kaberuka said: "Through this national office, the African Development Bank Group marks its effective presence in Algeria. It draws on the strength and the rich experience of partnership of 40 years, to contribute modestly to the actual great national building sites and support the building of Algeria of Tomorrow. This office is yours; it will be at your service; it will accompany your efforts. It will have quickly working to set up a building site of excellence , working in close collaboration with all entire partners for the implementation of the wide programme of national development."
Djoudi said: "This office will permit Algeria and the African Development Bank to develop the financial relations especially in the economic field by financing or by technical support. I thank our brothers from the African Development Bank for this precious initiative which will permit Algeria, the economists and companies resident in Algeria to develop the means to finance projects in Algeria."
On December 31, 2009, the AFDB approved 30 operations beneftting Algeria. They had a value of 3.2 billions of U.S. dollars.
The Algiers office is the AFDB's 25th field office on the continent.
The AFDB has 77 member states: 53 African ones and 24 non-regional ones. The bank has been based temporarily in Tunis since leaving Abidjan when Ivory Coast plunged into civil war in 2002. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
