So, this is something the United Kingdom encourages and I welcome these steps towards closer cooperation between these two governments. The minister has also explained the position of Algeria on members of the Gaddafi family and others who have come into the country, I have raised that in the meetings that we have had and we have had good discussions about that as on all subjects. Of course it is our belief in the UK that Algeria should work with the Libyan authorities on any request they make about people that have come into the country and we respect their position on that. I've also made the request in all countries I've visited in the region that in relation to people that are fugitives from international justice that if they come onto the territory of the countries concerned then of course it is important to work with the Libyan authorities and international authorities to ensure that indictees of the International Criminal Court are brought to justice." (SOUNDBITE) (French) ALGERIAN FOREIGN MINISTER MOURAD MEDELCI, SAYING: "I can tell you for example that yesterday Mr (UNCLEAR) received our ambassador in Tripoli and at the end of the meeting which was extremely constructive, Mr (UNCLEAR)'s interest in building a manifold, solid, ambitious cooperation was confirmed once more as well as the future arrival of a delegation that was announced by Mr Mahmoud Jibril was also confirmed by the President Abdulaziz (Bouteflika). So things are going in the right direction but the situation is certainly very difficult for our Libyan friends and those around Libya who, not only have an interest but also wish that Libyans, very soon, find stability, unity and a means of social development." - Story Text: During a visit to Algeria on Wednesday (October 19) UK Foreign Secretary William Hague warned the Libyan Gaddafi family not to see the country as a safe haven and pledged Britain's support in outing fugitives.
Speaking during a meeting with his Algerian counterpart Mourad Medelci, Hague said he has requested all nations in the region to expose fugitives.
"I've also made the request in all countries I've visited in the region that in relation to people that are fugitives from international justice that if they come onto the territory of the countries concerned then of course it is important to work with the Libyan authorities and international authorities to ensure that indictees of the International Criminal Court are brought to justice," said Hague.
Medelci expressed hopes for the prosperity of Algeria's Libyan neighbours.
"Things are going in the right direction but the situation is certainly very difficult for our Libyan friends and those around Libya who, not only have an interest, but also wish that Libyans, very soon, find stability, unity and a means of social development," said Medelci.
Algeria has repeatedly vowed not to give refuge to Muammar Gaddafi, though it did allow his wife and three of his children to enter the country in August. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
