- Story Text: Liverpool coach Kenny Dalglish said on Thursday (November 3) that club captain Steven Gerrard is responding well to treatment on his infected ankle.
The 31-year-old Liverpool skipper had only recently returned to the side after being out with a groin injury for six months but missed last Saturday's (October 29) 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion with this new, unrelated problem.
Speaking at a news conference ahead of Liverpool's Premier League match with Swansea City at Anfield on Saturday (November 5) Dalglish was optimistic that Gerrard would not be sidelined for long.
"Steven, since he found the infection, has really been progressing extremely well everything is positive for him. They found the infection but I suppose it's a little bit like flu, you know you've got it but you don't know where it came from, but they're treating it and it's responding really well so it's positive for him," he said.
The problem started when Gerrard cut his ankle in training and was then kicked on it, forcing him to pull out of the England squad for friendlies against Spain and Sweden later this month.
Liverpool are in sixth place in the table just one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea. Dalglish said he was pleased with the burgeoning strike partnership behind big money signings Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez which could be crucial as they chase a top four place to qualify for next season's Champions League.
"Obviously for us it's important for us that there's relationships and partnerships within the football team. Andy and Luis, it's just one of the partnerships," said the Scot.
"The more they train together, the more they play together, the better the understanding will be but that applies to most of the players that have come in. Also the more time they spend here, the more time they spend together the better their understanding will be and so far we've been delighted with the progress that they've made." - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
