- Story Text: Sophie Marceau brought some French romance to China at news conference in Beijing on Monday (December 3), as she promoted her new movie, "Happiness Never Comes Alone".
The romantic comedy is about the relationship between a playboy jazz musician played by Gad Elmaleh and a single mother of three a role portrayed by Marceau.
During the news conference, Marceau told reporters that China's recent economic and technological boom had contributed to the accessibility of French movies in the Asian country.
"China has been evolving quite a lot for those last years, and (is) open now to see more and more foreign movies. I think technology helps a lot now to promote those movies," she said.
Although the French film industry is not as commercial as in the U.S., Marceau believes that her movies have still gained a wide viewership overseas.
"My movies are not American, but they've been released in China for the last 20, 30 years. So, I'm French, and I think there (is) a lot of talent in France. We're not as good at promoting as Americans are. It's expensive, cinema is an expensive art. So it has to be an industry as well," Marceau said.
"Happiness," which debuted in France on June 27, was released in Chinese theatres on Tuesday (November 27).
The film was brought to China by Seven Stars Entertainment, owned by media tycoon Bruno Wu, who attended Monday's news conference.
Marceau has visited China multiple times over the past decade to promote her films, as the country becomes an increasingly important market for the movie industry in the West. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
