- Story Text: Algerian bakers competed for the title of the country's Best Pastry Chef in an event organised by the American embassy in Algeria.
The competition, which brought together more than 20 chefs, aimed to promote the pastry-making talents of Algerian bakers and introduce them to foreigners.
Samiha Yekdah said she participated in the contest to represent her country.
"I participated to promote our heritage and to show to foreigners what we make, our creation, that we are able, that we innovate too, that's the aim actually, and it is also to win the competition and to represent Algeria well," said Yekdah, a competitor in the pastry contest.
Loubna Djeribia said she hoped to promote tourism through her participation in the competition.
"My participation in this competition is first to show the Algerian traditions, to promote the Algerian tourism and also to show my artistic capacity," said Djeribia, another competitor.
The chefs' pastry work was judged by a group of juries along with Duff Goldman, an American pastry chef and television celebrity.
Goldman visited Algeria from May 10-18 to take part in the competition and share his professional expertise with Algerian bakers. He said the competition was beneficial to Algeria and foreign chefs alike.
"The point of having a competition like this here in Algeria, there is actually two, one is I am bringing what I know and what I have done in the United State here to Algeria to say look: here is how we decorate cakes, but the other one is I am watching all these guys doing things that I have never seen before; so I am also taking away some Algerian culture so when I go home my cakes are going to be better as well. This is really cool," explained Goldman.
Samiha Yekdah won the title of Best Pastry Chef in the competition and was rewarded with a three-week visit to the United States inclusive of all expenses and a training course at Duff's workshop.
Goldman is the Executive Chef of the popular cake shop, 'Charm City Cakes', based in Baltimore, USA. It is featured in the Food Network reality television series "Ace of Cakes." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
