- Story Text: The 18th International Book Fair of Algiers was underway in the Algerian capital on Wednesday (November 6).
On offer are a wide variety of books catering to all types of visitors.
Visitors thronged the venue on the opening day, saying they had come to the fair for different reasons.
"I came to check some English books, and to see what the new books are in general, and the participating publishing houses," said Fadela.
"I'm here because we can find any book we look for and with an affordable price, trying to fill for the entire year," said Rabeh, clutching his new purchase.
Stalls of publishers of encyclopaedias and dictionaries were packed with visitors.
A representative of Hachette Larousse explained why.
"People's demands are generally about academic books, people here are sensible about everything concerning instruction and youth training, so many books are of an academic style," said Gwenael Luherne, export manager of the company.
One man selling books in the Larousse stand said books made a much better gift for religious occasions.
"For the first of Muharram it is a better gift to offer a book than to eat chicken. We sold many books but we should wait for the day before the closure to have a clear idea," said Abdel Kader.
This year's event has attracted far more publishers than in previous years. Last year, 718 publishers took part in the fair.
"This large cultural event embraced this year approximately 922 publishing houses, 44 countries including Algeria, and to be honest, we made an effort to prepare this session but the huge turnout of visitors, students and audience, makes us forget the fatigue and makes Algeria proud," said fair commissioner Hamidou Missaoudi.
The fair runs till November 9. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
