- Story Text: Algeria's western city of Oran hosted the fifth edition of the International Fair of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SIPA 2013) for the first time.
The four-day event, which started on Wednesday (November 6), showcased the work of over 100 Algerian and foreign exhibitors. Experts from abroad included Libya, Mauritania and France.
Algeria's minister for Fisheries and Halieutic Resources, Sid Ahmed Ferrouki, said the fair encouraged progress in the sector.
"I think as you can see all the partners, including clients and fishermen and people from other sectors have mobilised to develop this sector to have a promising future on the economic level as well as in the integration level. The aim of this fair is to find solutions that will improve this sector and keep it going forward," Ferrouki told Reuters TV.
The sector is keen to modernise and integrate networks of marine fisheries and improve governance, said Ferrouki.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, which seeks to strengthen aquaculture-related legislation, also took part in the fair.
Libyan exhibitors made their debut at the international exhibition, with Mohamed Badr Eddin Esagr, the director of Marine Resources for the country saying he hoped for further bilateral relations between the two countries in the sector.
"This is our first post in Algeria and we aspire to build bridges of cooperation between the Algerian and Libyan companies in the field of sea fishing. We wish to take advantage of the Algerian experience in this field and to explore joint investment in the field of sea fishing," he said.
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) taking part in the fair promoted its training courses to fisheries specialists on various fields of fisheries sciences.
"The reason that we participate in this event is to promote our successful results to the Algerian people, so that we (can) try to increase the fishery industry in Algeria," said KOICA representative Gyong Shik Chon.
Participants from varying corners of the sector attended the fair held in the Oran Convention Centre. Experts from the shipbuilding industry and groups that specialise in transfer of fish products worked to promote collaboration.
The fair, dubbed by the Algerian ministry as "Together towards a responsible, economical and integrated fishery", concluded on Saturday (November 9). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
