- Story Text: Two super-shoppers from Taiwan won both the grand prize and the Special Prize - Fashion and Beauty, in Hong Kong's "Shopper of the year" contest Fifteen teams of super-shoppers from all over the world battled for the coveted title of 2004 Hong Kong Shopper of the Year and some of the six alluring prizes.
Each team was armed with HK$3,000 spending money to spread amongst four different product themes, the teams sought out the most creative and best-value shopping bargains.
The contest is being organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) to stimulate worldwide consumer interest in the 2004 Hong Kong Shopping Festival and in Hong Kong as a prime destination. All 15 finalists have already won preliminary contests in their home countries or regions, creating extensive global publicity for the Festival.
HKTB Executive Director Ms Clara Chong said that as well as achieving wide international publicity for the Hong Kong Shopping Festival, the contest added further fun and interest to the event and highlighted the city's uniqueness and excitement as a shopping destination.
"Through their purchasing experience, the contestants can discover for themselves some of Hong Kong's many strengths in shopping - its huge variety of shops and merchandise, its value for money, its quality services and most important of all, its hospitality culture," she said.
The winners of the Grand Prize receive two Cathay Pacific Business Class round trip tickets between Hong Kong and any destination within its network, two extra nights extension on hotel stay with upgrade to suite room, one Samsung 40" LCD TV, two Samsung Notebooks, one trophy and one certificate.
In 2002, the United States took top prize, but this year they faced even stronger competition with rival contestants coming from Australia, Canada, Italy, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, Mainland China, Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Since the Shopping Festival began on 26 June, over 1.3 million visitors had come to Hong Kong from around the world and HKTA is expecting 3.7 million visitors during the full duration of the Festival. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
