- Story Text: Organizers tasked with readying Algeria's World Cup team base were applying the final touches on Monday (June 2).
Algeria's squad is scheduled to arrive at the newly-constructed base on June 10. Their choice in facility, an all inclusive training center built by local soccer club Atletico Sorocaba is located just over 100 kilometers from Brazil's largest city of Sao Paulo.
Besides a gym and pool area with magnificent 360 views, Algeria's team will have use of four soccer fields.
One of the practice fields both meets the specifications of soccer's world governing body FIFA and has been outfitted with the same grass as found in Brazil's 12 World Cup stadiums.
Vice-president of Atletico Sorocaba, Mauricio Raimundo Baldini said that when he and his team received delegates from ten different competing World Cup nations the training center still lacked some of the necessary facilities.
"Basically, at the end of last year we received ten World Cup delegations and they all showed interest to stay here in our training center but the hotel was still being built and we were still preparing one of the training fields," Baldini said.
Algeria had faith that the facilities could be finished on time and chose Sorocaba as their base last January.
Baldini also told Reuters that Algeria's decision was partly influenced by the training center's ability to meet specific cultural and religious requirements.
Organizers have seen to it that Algeria's living quarters will have a prayer room, a copy of the Koran in each room and a kitchen able to meet the team's specific culinary needs.
Baldini said that the city of Sorocaba is very well located to local airports will have no problem attending to the team's travel needs.
"I think the technical commission of Algeria is very happy to have chosen Sorocaba. Sorocaba is a privileged city. We have two major highways that pass close to the city, Sorocaba has a good airport, big airplanes and executive jets land in Sorocaba. Viracopos Airport in Campinas is very close and then a bit farther we have Guarulhos Airport," Baldini said.
Algeria belongs to Group H and will play in the first round Belgium in Belo Horizonte June 17th, Korea Republic June 22nd in Porto Alegre and Russia June 26th in Curitiba. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
