- Story Text: Since Algeria qualified for the 2010 World Cup, Ahmed Lachaoui has been making a unique souvenir for football fans in his Algiers workshop.
Ahmed is a plasterer and amongst the ceiling roses and pedestals in his shop are dozens of golden World Cup trophies.
The plaster replicas are popular with his customers and at less than five U.S dollars, a lot cheaper than a trip to Brazil.
"In 2010 I got the idea to make this world cup so I made this mould and thank God it is good and people are buying it to support the Algerian team and everybody wants to have the World Cup at home. It is 400 DZ($4) the piece" he said So far, the plaster craftsman has sold 2000 replicas and customers like the idea of cheering on the national team with a World Cup copy in their home.
"All the kids are happy with it, we all know that it is artisan; and instead of going to Brazil, the World Cup is here without going to Brazil. And I hope that the national team does a good result," said one customer, Samir.
Algeria qualified for the South Africa World Cup in 2010 for the third time after a 24-year absence but only just claimed a place in Brazil 2014 with an advantage on away goals against Burkina Faso. They have never progressed past the group stages in a World Cup tournament, although came closest in Spain 1982, but were eliminated on goal difference. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
