- Story Text: Egypt's new president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi arrived in the Algerian capital on Wednesday (June 25), on his first official foreign trip since winning a landslide election in May.
As his plane touched down in Algiers, Sisi was met by Algerian Senate chairman Abdelkader Bensalah and was later due to hold discussions with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, in a bid to boost co-operation between the two countries.
Last month's election, which officials said Sisi won with 97 percent of the vote, followed three years of upheaval since a popular uprising ended 30 years of rule by former air force commander Hosni Mubarak. Sisi toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Brotherhood last July after mass protests against his rule.
The turmoil has battered Egyptian tourism and investment, worsening a huge unemployment problem and pushing up the deficit.
On Tuesday (June 24), Sisi pledged to give up half his salary and property and called on the Egyptian people to make similar sacrifices, trying to prepare the public for a period of painful economic austerity.
Sisi's trip to Algeria will look to enhancing political and economic ties between the two countries, according to a presidential statement. It will be followed by a trip to Equatorial Guinea's Malabo where he is scheduled to give a speech on Thursday (June 26) at the African Union's 23rd Ordinary Summit. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
