- Story Text: Fergie, the singer of pop-rap group the Black Eyed Peas, announced on Thursday (March 20) a program dedicated to helping survivors of extreme forms of gender-based violence around the world.
The State Department hosted experts from around the world to discuss the initiative, including activists from India, Mexico, Nepal, and South Africa, which will be first countries to take part in the new program.
The new program addresses the security needs of survivors of gender-based violence, as well as individuals who are under threat of imminent attack due to their gender or gender identity.
Key provisions of the program include short-term emergency grants to cover medical and psychosocial care, emergency shelter and legal assistance.
Fergie, 38, rose to prominence when her addition to the Black Eyed Peas lineup coincided with a string of breakout hits for the group from their 2003 album "Elephunk."
Her 2006 solo album "The Dutchess" scored three Number One hits in the United States. - Copyright Holder: STATE DEPARTMENT TV
