- Story Text: A long line of supporters formed on Sunday morning (August 24) to pay their respects to JS Kabylie striker Albert Ebosse, who died on Saturday evening (August 23) at the central university hospital in Tizi Ouzou, Algeria.
The Cameroon forward was struck on the head by an object thrown from the crowd after an Algerian league match on Saturday. There are allegations the missile was thrown from his club's own fans as players left the field.
JS Kabylie had lost the match 2-1 at home to USM Alger. Ebosse had scored his team's only goal.
The supporters lined up within the hospital compound to file past Ebosse's coffin. Some held up photographs of the 24-year-old striker in remembrance.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) called for "exemplary sanctions" after Ebosse's death. Algeria's interior ministry ordered an investigation into the incident, and told APS that whoever was responsible for the attack should be immediately arrested.
JS Kabylie confirmed in a statement posted on the club's website that the striker had died in hospital after the assault, although they did not confirm the exact cause of death.
CAF president Issa Hayatou reacted by calling for member associations to act strongly against fan violence and for the perpetrators of this incident to be dealt with in the strongest possible terms.
The 24-year-old Ebosse was the leading scorer in the Algerian league in the 2013-14 season with 17 goals having played the previous season in Malaysia. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
