And, of course, it's good to see that slowly he gains confidence, finishes well and it's nice to see that the potential is there and that he's starting to get that and hopefully this hat-trick will help him to gain confidence." WENGER SEEN THROUGH A CAMERA VIEW FINDER (SOUNDBITE) (English) ARSENAL MANAGER, ARSENE WENGER, SAYING: "It helps always to know that you have confidence and that you have a good chance of playing in the next game. But what is good for me is his link play is good as well, his teamwork, his work rate is at the level of the team and his attitude is very positive. He's a team player, he's not only a finisher and he has learned that on the flank. Now he wants to help the team." MEDIA AT NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (English) ARSENAL MANAGER, ARSENE WENGER, SAYING: "Look, we lost the ball, an unneeded ball in our own half and after that it was a played through ball. When I saw it, I saw him (Wojciech Szczesny) coming out, I thought maybe he has read the situation well. He decided to come out, he was a fraction late and a penalty, it can happen." GALATASARAY COACH CESARE PRANDELLI ARRIVING FOR NEWS CONFERENCE MEDIA AT NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (Italian) GALATASARAY COACH, CESARE PRANDELLI, SAYING: (ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL TRANSLATION) "All the goals have been one-on-ones. The formation doesn't matter, if you are not aggressive and if you allow the players, like (Alexis) Sanchez to go around you. So the formation doesn't count. We need to understand that the Champions League is a big thing; it's a very big thing for us. So you need to be prepared, you need to be more aggressive. You could see a difference in the running and they have very good quality in every area of the pitch." - Story Text: Danny Welbeck answered critics who have questioned his goalscoring ability in emphatic fashion on Wednesday (October 1) with his first senior hat-trick in Arsenal's 4-1 win over Galatasaray in the Champions League.
The 23-year-old England international has impressed with his work rate and link-up play since signing from Manchester United on transfer deadline day, but doubts remained about his predatory instinct in front of goal.
He scored during a 3-0 Premier League win against Aston Villa last month but spurned a host of chances in his three other appearances before the visit of the Turkish side.
Yet he produced three exquisite finishes at the Emirates that helped belie his supposed lack of composure and ruthlessness.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, celebrating his 18th anniversary since taking over the north London club, praised the 16 million-pounds acquisition.
"We had good pace in our game and our transition was good and our finishing was good and Danny (Welbeck) was at the end of good collective movements," Wenger told reporters at a news conference. "And, of course, it's good to see that slowly he gains confidence, finishes well and it's nice to see that the potential is there and that he's starting to get that and hopefully this hat-trick will help him to gain confidence.
"It helps always to know that you have confidence and that you have a good chance of playing in the next game. But what is good for me is his link play is good as well, his teamwork, his work rate is at the level of the team and his attitude is very positive. He's a team player, he's not only a finisher and he has learned that on the flank. Now he wants to help the team."
Galatasaray had never won in nine previous visits to England, and the match was over as a contest when Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez scored Arsenal's third goal before half-time.
Welbeck completed his hat-trick shortly after the break and the only blot on Arsenal's copybook was a needless red card for goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny who rashly brought down Burak Yilmaz, who tucked away the resulting spot kick.
Wenger said Szczesny was right to try and challenge for the ball and was unfortunate to concede the penalty.
"Look, we lost the ball, an unneeded ball in our own half and after that it was a played through ball. When I saw it, I saw him (Wojciech Szczesny) coming out, I thought maybe he has read the situation well. He decided to come out, he was a fraction late and a penalty, it can happen."
After their opening-night loss to Borussia Dortmund, victory lifted Arsenal into second place behind the German club with three points. Galatasaray and Anderlecht have one point apiece.
Galatasaray's supporters showed plenty of passion at The Emirates, keeping up a cacophony of sound for most of the first half and launching numerous flares on to the pitch.
Their team, however, were harmless, providing the perfect opposition for an injury-hit Arsenal side that badly needed a win after a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund a fortnight ago.
Galatasaray coach Cesare Prandelli said that his team were not aggressive enough and did not pressurise Arsenal when the English side had the ball.
"All the goals have been one-on-ones. The formation doesn't matter, if you are not aggressive and if you allow the players, like (Alexis) Sanchez to go around you," Prandelli said. "So the formation doesn't count. We need to understand that the Champions League is a big thing; it's a very big thing for us. So you need to be prepared, you need to be more aggressive. You could see a difference in the running and they have very good quality in every area of the pitch.
"It is important for us to understand that we made mistakes and how we can develop and it will be up to us to correct it."
