- Story Text: Filipinos cheered as the country's boxing hero Manny Pacquiao knocked down American challenger Chris Algieri six times to retain his WBO welterweight championship in Macau on Sunday morning (November 23).
At a public park in the eastern Manila suburb of Marikina, over 3,000 people watched the live telecast on large LED screens.
Fans cheered each time Pacquiao landed successful punches on Algieri and shouted words of encouragement.
Although Pacquiao sometimes struggled to hit Algieri cleanly because of his opponent's backward motion, the punches he did land took their toll.
"This is the best fight I've seen of Pacquiao. Pacquiao, you're the champion! You're our number one," said Robert Medina, a long-time fan of Pacquiao.
"The people here are happy because he won again," said Merafe Ansel, a maid who dropped by to watch the fight.
The win raised once more the prospect of a long-anticipated clash with undefeated American Floyd Mayweather, a fight that Pacquiao said he welcomed.
"He should really fight Mayweather next. That's what everyone is waiting for," said retired employee Mario Umali.
Pacquiao's storied 20-year professional career is littered with wins over some of boxing's biggest names, including Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley and Oscar De La Hoya.
He suffered successive defeats in 2012 but has got back on track with two impressive wins over Brandon Rios and Timothy Bradley. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
