- Story Text: Delegates to the first full summit meeting of the Organisation of Oil Exporting Countries (OPEC) continued to arrive at Algiers airport in Algeria on Monday (4 March) as final preparations were being made for the opening of the vital conference next day.
The summit--at which 13 oil exporting countries are represented by their heads of state or oil ministers--could vitally effect the future stability of the world oil market.
Algerian President Houari Boumedienne was at the airport to welcome Ecuador's President Guillermo Lara--one of eight heads of state attending the summit.
Next to arrive was Sheikh Sabah of Kuwait, followed by Sheikh El Thani of Qater and President Omar Bongo of the Gabon Republic.
King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, was unable to attend, but he was represented by Price Fahd, the Deputy Prime Minister. The United Arab Emirates were represented by Sheikh Zayed of Abu Dhabi.
Another arrival was the influential Shah of Iran who gave a news conference with President Boumeienne.
The Shah said that the OPEC countries were ready to defend their interests. "We will not allow anybody to step on our feat", he said.
The main aim of the summit is to formulate a declaration -- already dubbed the 'OPEC Charter' -- which will form the basis for the oil exporting countries' approach to the coming dialogue with the consuming nations in a world energy conference.
