- Story Text: The people of Algeria have reportedly given
overwhelming backing to a peace plan but forward by the
country's president, aimed at bringing to an end seven years
of brutal civil strife.
Algeria's interior minister Abdel Malek Sellal said on
Friday (September 17) that voters gave a 98.63 percent yes
vote in a referendum on President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's peace plan.
He told a news conference that voter turnout among
Algeria's 17.5 million voters totalled 85.06 percent.He said
those who voted yes totalled around 14.6 million.
Bouteflika called the referendum saying he needed a
powerful popular mandate to end more than seven years of
violence and revenge that have ravaged the economy and killed
more than 100,000 people.
About 40,000 polling stations across Algeria's 48
provinces closed at 8 p.m.(1800 GMT) after 12 hours of
voting.Voters were asked a single question: "Do you agree
with the president's approach to restore peace and civilian concord"
Under his June peace plan, Bouteflika freed thousands of
supporters of the relatively moderate Islamic Salvation Army
(AIS) and the armed wing of the banned Islamic Salvation Front
(FIS).He offered to pardon more if the deal was approved in
the referendum.
