- Story Text: Algeria is to have a new constitution. Its terms were considered by a special conference of national leaders and key members of the National Liberation Front, Algeria's only political party, on Saturday (6 November). It will be put to the people in a referendum on Friday, November 19th.
SYNOPSIS: Saturday's meeting followed two days of detailed work by a representative committee to put the finishing touches to the text. The new constitution will carry out the principles of the National Charter of Islamic Socialism which was adopted by an overwhelming majority in a referendum last June. Algeria's first constitution was suspended in 1965. Since then, the country has been ruled by the Council of the Revolution.
President Houari Boumedienne attended the conference on Saturday, which was held in the Palais des Nations in Algiers. During the course of the meeting, he announced the date on which the referendum would take place.
The President's own office will be put to election when the new constitution comes into force. Elections will also be held for a new National Assembly. The Algerian people have been promised that these elections, as well as the referendum, will be held before the end of this year. Mr. Boumedienne has been adopted as the only candidate for the Presidency.
