- Story Text: The National Council of the Mauritanian People's Party -- the country's single party -- has accused Algeria of arming mercenaries against Mauritania.
Referring to recent fighting over the Western Sahara in a resolution passed at a meeting which began in Nouakchott on Friday (30 January), the Council protested against Algeria's "slander campaign" against Mauritania and said it regretted that "leaders of the Algerian brother people allowed themselves to be drawn into a hopeless adventure instead of working towards building the Arab Maghreb" (alliance of north African Arab nations).
The resolution added that Algeria had used armed mercenaries against Mauritania in violation of the non-interference principle. It also said that recent attacks against settlements had placed Mauritania in a position of legitimate self-defence, but despite this war situation, Mauritania would continue to seek peace untiringly.
The National Council met under the Chairmanship of Mauritania's Head of State, Moktar Ould Daddah. In his opening speech Monsieur Ould Daddah said that the meeting would concern itself solely with the subject of the re-unification of Mauritania.
He pointed out that at his first official public appearance in July 1957 he had highlighted the problem of the Sahara as an integral part of Mauritania.
