- Story Text: The Organisation of African United ended its ninth summit meeting in Rabat, Morocco on Thursday (15 June) in a spirit of reconciliation. Many delegates expressed the belief that while the meeting had not been an overwhelming success, that some progress had been made.
One gesture of reconciliation was made between Morocco and Algeria when they signed an accord putting the seal on final settlement of a ten-year old frontier dispute between their neighbouring North African States. King Hassan signed for Morocco, and President Houari Boumedienna for Algeria.
King Hassan is the newly elected O.A.U. chairman. In his remarks to the assembly on the last da o the summit he called for the coming year to be one of liberation on the African continent.
Other speakers in the three-hour closing debate, held in public, also praised the trend towards reconciliation between African countries and liberation movements that have been at odds, referring to it as the "spirit of Rabat."
SYNOPSIS: The summit meeting of the Organisation of African Unity ended in Rabat, Morocco on Thursday. The three day session was attended by twenty-two African heads of state.
At the last session, which lasted three hours, delegates expressed praise for the spirit of reconciliation between countries that had been shown during the summit....The main decisions of the summit meeting were to increase aid to African liberation movements, call for an end to white minority rule in Southern Africa and to condemn Portugal's continued rule over its african possessions.
Britain was urged to call a constitutional conference to settle the future of Rhodesia, and the O.A.U. pledged assistance to Egypt in its stand against Israel. The conference also urged greater inter-african cooperation in economic and social affairs.
To illustrate the spirit of reconciliation at the conference, the closing session featured the signing of and accord between Algeria and Morocco that put the final seal on the settlement to their ten-year old frontier dispute. King Hassal, who is the newly elected O.A.U. chairman, signed the treaty for Morecco, and President Houari Boumedienne for Algeria. The two countries went to war over the contested region in 1963 for four weeks...A second treaty dealing with joint exploitation of iron ore deposits int he once disputed area was also signed...Some delegates called this trend towards reconciliation between African states the "spirit of Rabat".
