- Story Text: Senior Algerian opposition figures on Tuesday (November 22) joined forces to urge an end to the violence that has killed thousands of people since the army cancelled elections and took power in the North African country in 1992.
Speaking at the end of a two-day gathering to discuss the crisis that has killed up to 30,000 people, they demanded the outlawed fundamentalist Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) be included in the political process.
Former Algerian president Ahmed Ben Bella called on the government to end the violence he says has pushed the country to the brink of civil war by freeing political prisoners and closing the special tribunals that judge them.
The senior FIS delegate to the conference, Anwar Haddam, pledged his group's support for a multi-party system and its opposition to violence.
Abdelhamid Mehri, leader of the National Liberation Front (FLN), demanded that all political forces including the FIS be allowed to take part in presidential elections which Zeroual has said will be held before the end of next year.
