- Story Text: Security is being stepped up in Algeria as the country prepares to go to the polls on Thursday (November 16) in its presidential elections.
There are fears Moslem militants will attempt to wreak havoc having made death threats against would-be voters.
And the main legal opposition parties say they'll boycott the ballot.
On the streets of Algiers there is a mixed response from the public. Some accept elections are essential to improve democracy.
There are four candidates - former general Liamine Zeroual, who was appointed president in January 1994 by a military-dominated council and is favourite to win; Mahfoud Nahnah, leader of the legal Islamist party Hamas; Said Saadi, an anti-Islamist hawk and leader of the Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD) and Noureddine Boukrouh, a moderate Islamist intellectual and head of the Algerian Renewal Party (PRA).
Mahfound Nahnah, leader of the opposition Hamas party, says the vote will be a good thing in order to "stop those who want to hurt Algeria." And at the campaign headquarters of President Zeroual there is supreme optimism from party worker Ben Husir Belkasem, that his candidate was going to win, and win easily.
