- Story Text: - INTRO: Thousands of French and Algerians have marched through the streets of Paris to call for an international probe into massacres of civilians in the North African country.
Chanting "Long Live Algeria" and "Stop the Massacres in Algeria", about 14,000 marchers walked through the streets of Paris on Monday (November 10) to give expression to their sense of horror as the bloodshed that has claimed 65,000 lives continues.
Many of the demonstrators waved Algerian flags as they marched from central Paris to a park in the north-eastern part of the capital.
The "Day for Algeria", organised by human rights groups, intellectuals and entertainers, involved such stars as actor Gerard Depardieu, actress Anouk Aimee and singer Barbara Hendricks.
Former French Culture Minister Jack Lang also attended the march.
The demonstration ended in a late-night meeting marked by speeches and Algerian music.
Over the past few weeks, calls for action have mounted in France as mass killings of villagers, blamed by the Algerian government on Moslem fundamentalist guerrillas, multiplied.
In the latest massacre, suspected guerrillas killed at least 26 civilians, including 11 children, slashing their throats or chopping off their heads at the weekend just outside the garrison town of Blida, the Algiers daily Al Watan said.
