- Story Text: On Thursday (6 September) the second day of the Summit Conference of Non-Aligned Countries, the first three formal speeches were so long that Algeria's President Houari Boumedienne had to warn the delegates that if they all spoke at such length, the conference would not finish on time. During the day's business thirty leaders were scheduled to speak, but in the four hour morning session only seven speeches were made.
Sudan's Jaafar Nimeiry spoke during the morning, and then left the Club des Pins Conference Centre to fly back home. He had originally intended to leave Algiers on Saturday (8 September), but because of the state of emergency declared in Sudan during his absence, his delegation had made a special request for him to speak as early as possible.
During the day many of the speakers chose to condemn the economic exploitation by industrial countries of their own natural resources, especially petroleum. Among those who added their protests to those from the Middle East leaders were Mrs. Indira Gandhi of India, and President Tito of Yugoslavia.
The other major subject dealt with was Israel, which was attacked by practically every speaker. Many of them linked the liberation struggle for Africa and Indo-China with that of the Palestinian people.
SYNOPSIS: President Nimeiry of Sudan addressed the Summit Conference of Non-Aligned Countries in???glers on Thursday during the morning session of the second day. He'd requested to speak earlier than scheduled so he could return to Sudan, where there's a state of emergency. Prominent among so many was Fidel Castro of Cuba. Colonel Muammar Gaddafl of Libye also commanded attention from fallow delegates. The conference heard repeated condemnations of economic exploitation by industrialised countries of third world resources.
Mrs. Indra Gandhi of India called for a reassessment of the principles of Non-Alignment, and a restating of its goals. She said there were still areas of instability, conflicts, repression and injustice. There was still domination and discrimination and a few countries were trying to dominate the world.
In his speech President Nimeiry joined the other speakers in attacking the industrialised countries. He had planned to leave Algiers on Saturday, when the Conference ends, but the critical situation in Sudan made it essential for him to return immediately. During the previous twenty-four hours he had been in constant touch with Sudanese officials about the situation.
