- Story Text: Arab leaders begin arriving in Algiers one day ahead
of Arab League Summit.
Leaders of Arab countries began to arrive in Algeria
on Monday (March 21, 2005) ahead of an annual Arab League Summit
scheduled to be held in the country's capital.
Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi was one of the first
of the leaders to arrive on Monday. The summit is scheduled
to begin on Tuesday (March 22) and will be held for two
days.
Security was tight in the streets of Algiers as police
searched cars and guarded the summit's venue.
Foreign ministers from the attending Arab countries
already held meetings on Saturday (March 19) and Sunday
(March 20) to lay down the groundwork for the summit.
At the close of the foreign ministers' meeting on
Sunday, Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa summed up
the outcome of the talks, saying that the summit will not
be used as a meeting to discuss the normalisation of
relations with Israel.
"Israel, until now, is continuing to build settlements.
Until now they are still building the wall. Until now they
have not fulfilled their commitments made in Sharm
El-Sheikh to withdraw from (Palestinian) land. Until now we
have noT seen a clear commitment to implement the Road Map,
so I think that the right way and the right policy and
this is a message to (Israeli Foreign Minister) Silvan
Shalom, is to follow everything step-by-step,
implementation for implementation, progress for progress,"
Moussa said.
"Algeria, the country of martyrs, will not be the venue
to normalise relations with Israel and the Algerian Summit
will not be a summit for normalisation (of relations with
Israel)," Abdelaziz Belkhadem added.
This year's summit comes as the Arab League celebrates
is sixtieth anniversary.
