- Story Text: Four million Algerian children under six years old 28% of the total Algerian population - are being vaccinated against polimyeltitis over the next two weeks as part of a nationwide preventive medicine campaign undertaken by the Algerian Health Ministry. Two years of preparation have been needed to reach the final phase of this operation which will cost about one million US dollars. Roving Health Ministry "vaccination buses" will be sent into rural and desert areas to cover nomadic and isolated rural populations. Vaccine, bought from Belgium by the Algerian Health Ministry will be administered orally in three successive doses, the second within two months of the first and a booster shot one year later. No charge is made to parents for the operation which will take place in local elementary schools. Polio is endemic in Algeria and all children over six are considered to have acquired immunity. None of the 15,000 cases of paralytic polio registered since independence ten years ago occurred in a subject aged more than six years.
