- Story Text: More than 75 countries are expected to take a militant stand against big power domination at the fourth non-aligned summit conference, which starts in Algiers, Algeria on Wednesday, (September 5)
Another seven countries have been admitted to the non-aligned group, in what appears to be the biggest-ever gathering of Kings, Presidents and Prime Ministers.
the foreign ministers' meeting, which started before the summit proper, to decide the agenda, was livened by Libya's militant acting Foreign Ministers, Mr. Abdel-Atil Al-Abeidi. He wanted foreign fleets banned from the Mediterranean and all foreign bases in the region closed down. The Foreign Ministers refused to put the issue on either their own agenda or that of the heads of state; but, as a compromise, they agreed to refer the subject to a political committee, where it will be discussed again before the main meeting starts.
Libya's objections could have caused difficulties for the Mediterranean island of Malta, one of seven new countries applying for admission. Britain has a base on the island used by NATO powers. But the Maltese Prime Minister, Mr. Dom Mintoff, promised to evict the British when the lease runs out in 1979. Mr. Mintoff said the British base had only been allowed for economic reasons.
Algerian President Houari Boumedienne spent most of Tuesday meeting heads of state arriving at Algiers airport for the conference. Exiled Prince Norodo Sihnaouk of Cambodia was one of the guests. Arriving from Peking aboard a special Chinese 'plane, he praised Algeria's stand in favour of his exiled government. He claimed liberation forces in the Khmer Republic were in control of more than 90 per cent of the country.
