- Story Text: The Algerian Government is working hard to make next month's summit conference of the world's non-aligned countries a success. Not only have Ministers been making trips abroad to persuade other governments to send delegates to the conference, but the city of Algiers is undergoing a massive "spring-clean."
The Algiers City Council has asked residents to take an active role in the brightening-up campaign. Pressure is being put on shop-keepers and owners of apartment buildings to whitewash their premises and keep their display windows lit al night. Police are enforcing an almost forgotten city ordinance that forbids inner city residents to hang their washing out to dry on balconies after half-past nine in the morning.
Delegates to this, the fourth non-aligned summit, will be staying about 25 kilometres (15 miles) outside the city. The Heads of State will occupy large villas in the modern "Club des Pins" complex, and the delegations will be staying in tourist complexes and hotels on the nearby sea-front.
Security is already being tightened, and officials have stressed the responsibility they have towards the safety of their guests.
The conference probably will be dominated by a study of the world's economic problems. The Middle East situation is also expected to be high on the agenda.
