- Story Text: The star power at the Comic Con convention shined brightly on Friday (July 23) as Seth Rogen added his name to the list of Hollywood actors hoping to find box office magic with a big screen adaptation of a popular comic book hero.
Rogen, who stars as the lead in the upcoming film, "The Green Hornet," arrived at Comic Con where he walked a media line to help promote the idea of himself playing a super hero.
"We came up with the idea pretty fast, the idea to play off the relationship to between the hero and the sidekick," explained Rogen, who is better known with audiences for playing less-than heroic roles.
"We know part of the fun of the movie would be to start with a guy who is a ery unlikely hero and watch him slowly become one. Honestly, playing off the people's notions of me is the ideal way to tell that story."
Rogen is among the many Hollywood stars who've made the short trip to San Diego a destination stop on their promotional tour.
Comic Con has enjoyed robust crowds, thanks to Hollywood's love affair with action heroes who've successfully made the jump from comic book pages to box office darlings. Major film studios now regularly preview their tent-pole productions in an effort to gain traction ahead of their film's release.
In recent years, Comic Con has helped launched films such as "Iron Man," "Twilight" and "Avatar" to tremendous box office success, and the number of movies and TV shows being promoted in 2010 seems larger than ever for what, once upon a time, was merely a gathering of comic book fans.
Rogen's "Green Hornet" co-star, Christoph Waltz, likened the lure of comic books to the love of opera.
"Some people go to the opera and opera is very important to them. I don't think this is so far away," said Waltz, in trying to explain the stunning popularity of comic book heroes.
"We are dealing with mythology, we are dealing with art, we are dealing with something that our fantasies can actually take off on and our desires can be formulated. So, I would think it is an intrinsic human desire."
"The Green Hornet" is slated for a January 2011 release.
Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg followed on the arrival line. They were in town to pitch their upcoming film, "The Other Guys," an odd-couple buddy cop flick that both stars agreed they had a blast making.
"We are having fun, we had fun making the movie and it is nice to kind of get to do press as a gang," said Ferrell.
"It kind of takes us back to being on the set again. I don't know what is more fun than making movies. The only thing that is more fun is doing press for the movies that you made. That is actually the reward," joked Ferrell.
Wahlberg though was serious when he added that Comic Con is a great place to promote a film.
"It is only a drive away," explained Wahlberg.
"The fans are just smart, you know it is all about the fans. With Cannes it is all about the filmmakers and here it is all about the fans. They are really smart and they are really witty and you know they are going to have to show them something to get them to go to the movie. It's no like 'Oh well they are making this movie so we will go see it or so and so is in it so we'll go see it. No, it is show me, you have 15 seconds or 30 seconds to show me something interesting. That is how I decide what movies I am going to see."
"The Other Guys" opens August 2010.
