- Story Text: German filmmaker Wim Wenders rediscovers his fascination for the American West in his latest film, "Don't Come Knocking," which premiered Tuesday night (January 24, 2005) at the Sundance Film Festival.
Wenders, who helped redefine the the German cinema, reunites with Sam Shepard on the project. The actor wrote the screenplay and stars in the directors latest ode to the still untamed West.
""I love the West, it is my ideal landscape and I dreamt about it as a boy," explained Wenders. "I was 24 when I first came to America. When I got there, it was what I expected and I always wanted to be a painter and the American West is my dream landscape. I know how to frame there and I know how to set up my shots and it just works for me. Everything you shoot there is bigger than life and I appreciate it," he said.
"Don't Come Knocking" tells the story of Hollywood actor Howard Spencer (Sam Shepard), who lost on a drinking binge takes off on journey to find himself. His self-imposed road trip takes him through the scenic Western landscape to his boyhood home of Butte, Montana. Here the actor finds himself at a crossroads of deciding his future.
Although Wenders is a veteran of many film festivals, he said his trip to Sundance was special.
"It's my first time and I'm an old pro of many festivals like Cannes, Berlin and Venice. This is my first time in Sundance with a movie. So, ask me tomorrow. So far, I think it's superb," laughed Wenders.
His other films include "The State of Things" and "Paris, Texas," which won several awards at Cannes and earned him a BAFTA as best director. ENDS. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
