- Story Text: Gold medalists in the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition put on a gala concert at Moscow's newly opened conservatory Grand Hall.
The winners of the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition gathered in the Grand Hall of Moscow's newly opened conservatory to put on a gala concert on Friday (July 1).
The historic Moscow Conservatory, recently reopened to the public after it was closed due to restorations in Spring 2010 hosted a large crowd on Friday. The Tchaikovsky Competition marks the first cultural event to be held in the newly finished Great Hall. Part of the historic building still remains under restoration, with the full refurbishment expected to be complete by 2016.
Cello gold medalist Narek Hakhnazaryan was the first Tchaikovsky Competition champion to perform to the packed concert hall, and was followed by violin silver medalists who tied for second place Itamar Zorman from Israel and Sergey Dogadin from Russia.
Singers from South Korea - Jong Min Park and Sun Young Seo took first place in both the male and female vocal competitions, and were among the last musicians to perform.
Russian conductor Valery Gergiev who also chaired the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition Organizing Committee, conducted an orchestra who accompanied most of the medalists.
The International Tchaikovsky Competition, named after the Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, takes place once every four years and was first conducted over 50 years ago. It is one of the major events in the international classical music community. Previous participants included Dmitri Shostakovich, Mstislav Rostropovich, Heinrich Neuhaus, among others, and the competition has provided a platform for young musicians to gain international renown. Such names include Van Cliburn, Mikhail Pletnev, cellists David Geringas, Nathaniel Rosen, Antonio Meneses and singers Evgeny Nesterenko, Elena Obraztsova and Deborah Voigt.
The first ever competition, which took place in 1958, was comprised of two categories - piano and violin. However, starting with the second competition, four years later in 1962, a cello category was added, and a vocal category was also added in 1966. Since 1990 a fifth discipline was introduced to the competition - that for violin-makers. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
