- Story Text: The tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks were marked in Russia on Sunday (September 11) with a church service attended by the U.S. Ambassador to Russia.
The American flag at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow was at half mast on Sunday (September 11) morning as events began in Russia's capital to remember the horror of September 11, 2001, and the nearly 3,000 people who died in the hijacked plane attacks.
A memorial service, held at Moscow's St. Catherine church, was attended by U.S. Ambassador to Russia, John Beyrle.
The ambassador mentioned his thanks for the sympathy many Russians had extended to the U.S.
"For us Americans September 11th is, and will always remain, a painful day, but that pain is somehow made easier by the knowledge that so many of our friends here in Russia share the feeling that we have on this day," Beyrle said.
After the church service Beyrle and the officiating priest rang a bell in the churchyard to mark the event.
Beyrle spoke about the ongoing fight against terrorism, saying that the U.S. and other countries were succeeding in their efforts.
"We are winning (the war against terrorism)- al Qaeda has been decimated, it's leader Osama Bin Laden has been killed, his lieutenants have also been liquidated. The places of refuge and sanctuary for terrorists around the world are getting smaller and fewer," Beyrle said.
The 2001 attacks were followed by U.S.-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the latter of which Obama opposed. The United States still has thousands of troops deployed in both countries.
